In December 2013, Do-it the UK’s largest website for volunteering came under new ownership and they have been working on a new website which is due to go live in November 2014. During the next few weeks it is essential that we have up to date information for your volunteering opportunities before they are transferred to the new website.
This is all very new for us and we learning more and more as further developments keep arising so please be bear with us whilst these changes take shape.
What will be changing?
The new site will still be called Do-it, but will have a completely new look with additional features to help volunteers search through the wide range of opportunities that we are currently promoting for our members. There will also be new facilities on this site for your organisations such as the inclusion of your logo and photographs.
The most important thing to note is that as your local Volunteer Centre we will continue to promote your opportunities and support you in the recruitment of volunteers both through our in-house brokerage service, where we have informal chats with potential volunteers, and through the new do-it website.
One of the significant changes to the new do-it website is that alongside the volunteer opportunities, paid work roles will also be advertised and thus allowing not-for-profit organisations (charities, social enterprises, local authorities, housing associations etc.) to advertise their paid roles. However Chester Voluntary Action also offer this service free of charge and vacancies are listed on the jobs section of our website.
What have we done in preparation?
Firstly we have removed all the volunteering opportunities that have not been active in the last 2 years, and have updated all of the contact details to the best of our knowledge. If you know of any recent changes please let us know as soon as possible.
Secondly to reflect the widespread use of tablets and smartphones, the new do-it website will make use of the volunteering opportunity role title alone to list the opportunity. Therefore we will continue to promote all of your opportunities but have had to change the role titles to ensure that it reflects and promotes the role effectively. We have been encouraged to make the use of the 70 characters available on the do-it website for each role title and have altered each one by including additional information taken from your role descriptions. For example one of the roles we were promoting was titled ‘Branch Officer’, as this did not provide the prospective volunteer with enough information to make an informed choice we found that ‘Branch officer to lead and coordinate meetings and fundraising activities’ provided much more of an insight into what the volunteer could expect.
We are currently working through each of the roles we are promoting and will send out the revised role titles in the next week to ensure that you are happy with the changes. If not please state what you would prefer and we will change it straight away.
If you have any questions about the changes please do not hesitate to contact us on 01244 316587.
