Compact for Chester & DistrictWhat is a Compact? The Compact is a national initiative which has been developing since the mid 90s. Compacts are locally negotiated written agreements that are jointly drawn up by the Voluntary and Community, Public and other sectors to improve the ways in which they work together. All local authority areas in England are now required to have a Compact in place and public bodies are expected to meet standards of good practice as set out in Compact guidelines. What goes into a local Compact document? The contents and format of a Compact follow national guidelines which include local shared principles, undertakings for each sector, usually organised around specific topics referred to as codes, e.g. funding, policy appraisal and consultation, community organisations, black and minority ethnic groups and volunteering. The Compact document also includes actions and a timetable for them to be carried out. The Chester Compact framework document, launched on 13 April 2006, follows this broad format. It also reflects the call from organisations involved in local Compact discussions for a document that is succinct, understandable and focused on action. The Compact is a working document and is reviewed and updated annually. The latest Annual Review took place on 18 June 2008 [see review document 2007-08 below].
