In 2014 Refugee Action developed and led a national campaign on the rights for refugees and asylum seekers to volunteer. As a consequence the Home Office changed their guidance and there are no longer any restrictions on asylum seekers and refugees becoming volunteers. To find out more check out the document produced by Sheffield Volunteer Centre that summarises the Home Office position.
When engaging refugees and asylum seekers as volunteers remember that the minimum they will bring to your organisation is wealth of unique skills and experiences, an increase in the diversity within your organisation and they will develop and enhance your awareness of other cultures.
